CANCUN WATER SPORTS DIVING & SNORKELING

Cancun Water Activities

Many beachside hotels offer water-sports centers that offer rentals for rubber rafts, kayaks, wind-surfing, motorized jets and water skis, para-sailing, and snorkeling equipment. On the calm Nichupte Lagoon are outlets for water-skiing, sailboats, water jets, and water skis. The most popular activity ot this beautiful lagoon is the Jungle Tour.

Ride on an mini-boat for 2 persons through the jungle and then enjoy excellent snorkeling. Snorkeling is an easy way to catch a glimpse of the Caribbean’s brilliant underwater life. The Chintales Reef off Punta Cancun and the shallow reef at Punta Nizuc on the southern tip of Cancun are just right for beginning snorkelers. The Laguna del Amor, just inland from the western shore of the Nichupte Lagoon, is another interesting snorkeling site; the Lagoon is fed by one of the Yucatan Peninsula’s underwater springs. Many hotels on Cancun rent gear, and most marinas feature snorkeling on snorkel/dive combination trips.

These excursions are often all-day affairs that include lunch. Several cruises leaving Cancun make a snorkeling stop at Isla Mujeres  "El Garrafon"; trips depart from many hotel marinas, as well as other marinas and piers throughout the island. Experienced snorkelers should try the offshore reefs by the El Presidente Hotel on Isla Mujeres.

Scuba diving is fabulous in the Mexican Caribbean, too. Cancun has diving trip for every skill level, and local pros can suggest a tour appropriate to your experience. All the marinas give resort courses for beginners, and certification courses are also available. Nearby reefs include El Tunel, San Toribio and San Miguel; these 50-to-60-foot dive sites are great for observing the colorful life under the sea.

Seasoned divers will want to explore the famous Palancar Reef off Cozumel; check with your hotel travel desk or a reputable marina or tour operator to arrange a trip.  Isla Mujeres also offers excellent diving opportunities. Again, you can arrange a trip from the Cancun marinas or from a dive shop on Isla Mujeres. La Bandera, Los Manchones and Los Cuevones, all at depths of 40 feet in the Bahia de Mujeres, are ideal for beginning divers.

Those with more experience should visit the shipwreck of the Ultrafreeze, a 110-foot dive site about eight miles east of the island. Divers can also explore the remains of sunken Spanish galleons on the way to Isla Contoy.Scuba aficionados should not leave Isla Mujeres without checking out the Cave of the Sleeping Sharks; in this cave 70 feet below the surface, explored by Jacques Cousteau in the 1960s, you can come face-to-face with large “sleeping” sharks that allegedly will not attack.

OTHER WATER SPORTS

World-class windsurfing can be enjoyed in this area; the Nichupte Lagoon and the Bahia de Mujeres are ideal for this popular sport, and several marinas provide equipment rentals and lessons. Waterskiing, water biking and parasailing can also be arranged at many marinas. You can rent just about any other kind of water toy you like on Cancun, too, including power boats, sailboats, canoes, kayaks, Sunfish, Hobie Cats, inflatable rafts and inner tubes.

Sport fishermen can choose from a variety of fishing trips departing from Cancun and Isla Mujeres. In the spring, marlin, sailfish and deep-sea billfish are plentiful; throughout the year the reefs abound with grouper, barracuda and tuna. The Nichupte Lagoon provides a unique experienced; “fishing the flats” requires sharp eyesight, quick reflexes and good coordination, as well as some skilful boat maneuvering (which your guide will provide). Check around the local docks for trips specializing in the kind of fish you’re after. Most charters include gear, bait and beer as well as a captain and first mate who will take you where the fish are sure to be running.
