The Inter-American Development

government authorities from the
Bank’s 48 member countries,
including several finance

chiefs, will attend the official
gathering to discuss the Bank’s
future operations and
development challenges facing
Latin America and the Caribbean.
Representatives of other
multilateral financial
institutions, development
agencies, and private banks will
also attend the gathering. The
event marks the 51st annual
meeting of the IDB’s Board of
Governors, where key decisions
about the bank’s future
operations are made.
Prior to the board meeting, a
series of seminars will discuss
the region’s economic future
after the global financial
crisis and current development
challenges such as policies for
climate change after Copenhagen
and private sector financing.
Members of the press can
register to the event and access
a preliminary agenda for the
gathering at the Annual
Meeting’s Web Site.
About the Meeting
In late March or early April of
each year, the Boards of
Governors of the Inter-American
Development Bank (IDB) and the
Inter-American Investment
Corporation (IIC) hold their
Annual Meeting in one of the
Bank’s member countries. This
official gathering is a forum
for discussion among the
institution’s Governors, most of
whom are Ministers of Finance,
Presidents of Central Banks, or
other high level authorities of
the member countries.
Representatives of multilateral
financial institutions,
development agencies, and
private banks also attend.
In 2010, the Annual Meeting will
take place in Cancún, Mexico,
from March 19 to 23. A series of
seminars on topics of interest
to participants will be
sponsored prior to the opening
of the meeting.
Participation at the Annual
Meeting is by invitation. The
list of special guests from each
member country of the IDB and
the IIC, including private
sector organizations, banks, and
associations, is prepared
according to internal procedures
established for that purpose and
must be approved by the
respective country authorities.
The list for each country is
updated yearly to include
requests received after the
previous Annual Meeting up to
the time it is submitted to the
Board of Executive Directors.
Requests received after that are
submitted to the respective
Executive Director on an
individual basis.
Companies interested in being
invited to the upcoming Annual
Meeting should send a
communication to the Secretary
of the Bank at the address
indicated on the right,
requesting an invitation. Please
include a description of the
organization and a copy of its
financial statements. There is
no cost for registering. Guests
are responsible for their own
travel, lodging, and other
expenses.

Cancun to Host MPI's
MeetDifferent 2010
The Cancun Convention and
Visitors Bureau announced the
selection of Cancun as host city
for a major event organized by
MPI
Cancun, Mexico- DEC 10, 2009 -
As a result of a joined effort
between the Cancun CVB and the
Mexico Tourism Board, the city
of Cancun has been selected
among 12 other destinations to
host Meeting Professionals
International’s (MPI) 2010
edition of MeetDifferent, a
premier industry event formerly
known as MPI PEC. The decision
was made by MPI’s board of
directors, being that Cancun
offers all the conveniences of a
meetings destination.
This will be the first time the
event is held outside the United
States and Canada and will be
attended by 2000 visitors
including 900 meeting planers.
In this memorable ocassion, MPI
brings to Cancun its diverse
network of planners and
suppliers to share innovative
ideas and expertise to make
fruitful connections with the
industry community. An event of
this magnitude enables Cancun to
showcase its superb
infrastructure, resources and
business potential in the
meetings and conventions
industry.
According to Fernando Cervantes,
Director of Groups and
Conventions for the Cancun CVB,
“This event promotes the growth
of the meetings and conventions
industry not only in Cancun, but
at the national level, thus
resulting in a great opportunity
to boost the economic
development in the region.”
Cervantes is also confident that
this kind of events help to
positively frame the general
perception of Mexico among the
groups and conventions sector.
Established in 1972 and with
23,000 members worldwide,
Meeting Professionals
International (MPI) reunites 50%
of meeting planners of the
Asociation, Corporate and
Incentives Meetings sector. The
Dallas- based organization has
68 chapters accross 65 countries
including the U.S., Puerto Rico,
Canada, Mexico, Europe and
Japan. For more information,
visit www.mpiweb.org
This is another historic
achievement recently obtained by
Cancun, a destination that day
after day turns more competitive
in the meetings and incentives
industry. Earlier this year,
Cancun hosted the initial phase
of the CASE certification
provided by PCMA experts to
Cancun sales executives, being
the first time that this famed
certification is held outside
the United States. Also in
April, Cancun hosted the 7th
Annual Mexico Showcase and
Travel Expo and the PCMA
Education Foundation Partnership
Summit in May. It is worth
mentioning that the Cancun
Center was named The Best
Convention Center in Mexico and
Central America by the World
Travel Awards. These are some of
the reasons why Cancun is the
perfect Group Travel
Destination.
The meetings and conventions
industry attracts about 630,000
tourists a year to Cancun, each
one spending about US $1,250 per
stay- 30% more than the average
individual visitors- and these
groups are also willing to pay
higher hotel rates. Thus, group
tourism represents an attractive
and important market to develop.
Currently, there are about
100,000 meetings organized in
the U.S. each year, but only a
small percentage is held in
Mexico.

There’s already a very
noticeable advance in the
project
Cancun, Quintana Roo, December
4th, 2009- Cancun - known for
the majestic beauty of its
shoreline-, has successfully
begun the beach recovery project
with an investment of more than
USD $71 million dollars ($957
million pesos), throughout the
state of Quintana Roo.
The project began on September
4th, 2009 with the delivery of
more than two thousand tons of
pipeline material to Cancun; the
project will deliver 1.3 billion
gallons (6.1 million cubic
meters) of sand to replenish
Cancun’s Hotel Zone seashore.
Although the project has endured
some unforeseen delays, due to
weather conditions, the venture
resumed on November 15th and
continues with great
advancement, already creating a
very noticeable difference.
As of December 1st, 2009, more
than 227,020 gallons (1’191,550
cubic meters) had been poured
onto 1.28 miles (2,047 meters)
of Cancun’s beaches. This
represents a 23% advance for the
whole project.
The safety of tourists and
workers has always been and
remains a top priority.
Hoteliers, contractors and CFE (Comisión
Federal de Electricidad, Federal
Commission of Electricity)
supervisors are taking the
necessary measures to guarantee
the safety of all tourists
during the beach recovery
process, making sure all
equipment is maintained in
optimal working conditions to
avoid any unnecessary incidents.
The project is funded by both
federal and state governments.
Local participating
municipalities and private
investments will reinstate
approximately 6.9 miles (11.1
kilometers) of Cancun’s
coastline between Punta Cancun
and Punta Nizuc, creating a
spectacular beach oasis with
more than 131 feet (40 meters)
in width.
A team of researchers studied a
range of factors prior to the
restoration initiation, such as
the variety of cycles within
climates that would provide the
ideal moment to begin
revitalizing the beautiful
beaches of the state. The
projects’ main purpose is not
only to replenish the sand, but
to provide a long-term
environmentally conscious
result, said the project’s Chief
Engineer, Carlos Espinal. He
explained that the sand that
will be dispensed onto the beach
has many unique characteristics:
it remains cool and doesn’t get
hot with the sun; it has a high
density that is compatible with
the current sand, and as a
result would have a low volume
loss in case of a meteorological
event.
The beach recovery project is
set to be completed on February
10th, 2010.
Information has been provided by
the State of Quintana Roo’s
Federal Zone of Maritime and
Terrestrial Restoration,
Recuperation, Maintenance and
Sustainability Trust on behalf
of its official spokesperson,
President of the Cancun Hotel
Association, Rodrigo de la Peña.

Accompanied by the Consul General of Mexico in Chicago, Manuel Rodriguez; the CEO of the Mexico Tourism Board, Oscar Fitch and by various state tourism authorities, Elizondo thanked exhibitors and wished them much success in their efforts to continue to attract more visitors to Mexico, taking advantage of the benefits that Mexico offers the meetings and conventions industry.
According to the International Congress & Convention Association (ICCA), Mexico has moved from 11th to 9th place in terms of number of attendees at conferences worldwide. This means that from 2008 to 2009, the number of attendees increased from 74,116 to 119,084, a significant boost of 6 percent.
The Motivation Show is instrumental for Mexico, being that it is the most important tradeshow for the incentive travel market, and is visited by more than 20,000 people throughout the world.
Also during his visit, the Society of Incentive & Travel Executives (SITE), awarded Elizondo the SITE Solidarity Award in recognition for the work that Mexico has done to promote its tourism, the governments response after the influenza outbreak and the continuous support it gives back to the meetings and incentives industry.
Elizondo also met with various industry leaders such as Orbitz and United Airlines, to discuss trends in travel and tourism opportunities in Mexico, as well as strategies to help restore air travel frequency to Mexico. He also met with Alumni Holiday International, one of the largest companies for educational and cultural group travel, with whom he discussed the opportunities for Mexico in this segment, including museum groups, schools, colleges, universities and alumni associations of the most prestigious institutions in the United States.
